Karwa Chauth 2021: Fasting Rules and Rituals

Karwa chauth is an auspicious hindu festival for womens and it is celebrated with great pops and shows. This festival is mostly celebrated in the northern side of India like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and also it is celebrated in the other parts of the world. This karwa chauth festival falls every year in the month kartik when the chaturthi is on krishna paksha. This year karwa chauth festival is celebrated on 24 october 2021. On this day women perform different types of rituals and pujas. Every woman on this day fasts for the well-being of their husband.

Every married woman and soon to be married women celebrate this festival for the well-being and longevity of their husbands. And fasting has a special significance. On this every married and soon to be married woman do fasting from the sun rise till the moon rise. They do not consume food and water for the whole day. They end their fast after doing the worship of the moon in the evening or after giving  arghya to the moon in the evening.

Fasting Rules of Karwa Chauth

On the karwa chauth fast day every married woman wakes up before the sunrise to eat and drink. This will help them to keep on fast till the moonrise. What they eat and drink in the morning is prepared by their mother-in-law. We call it sargi. Every mother-in-law gives sargi to their daughter-in-law to eat before sunrise because fast starts before sunrise and ends after worshipping the moon at night. All day women do not take water and break their fast after giving arghya to the moon in the night. On this day every woman dressed up beautifully to perform the puja. After doing puja, women get karwa chauth gifts and goodies from their mother-in-law which is known as Bayas. Things included in the baya are savory fried snacks (mathri), dry fruits, clothes, bangles, and jewelry.

Rituals of Karwa Chauth Puja

Karwa chauth puja is performed by married women. In this puja all married women sit in a circle with their puja thalis. Also every woman’s karwa filled with the water and also they put different types of pudding in their thalis. Every married woman’s karwa is tied with the red-colored thread and it is decorated with the kharia, epun and roli.

When the puja begins women apply roli tika on Goddess Gauri with their thumb and the third finger of the right hand  and they also sprinkle water on the image of the goddess. And the same process is repeated with the epun and roli. As per the tradition women listen to the karwa chauth story from the elderly woman of the family or from the panditain.  Also women keep the whole grains and sweets together while listening to the karwa chauth vrat katha. After the katha women pray for the well-being and long life of their husbands. While listening to the story they pass their bayas to one another while chanting the prayers.

Fasting Rules: Do and Don’ts 

According to the Karva Chauth tradition, there are some rules of the vrat. You can not eat or drink before the moon rises. After the moon rises, and giving arghya to the moon you can end the fast.

Do’s:

  • Eat Sargi properly which is prepared or given by mother-in-law
  • Keep yourself busy during fasting hours
  • While fasting don’t do any physical exercises
  • When you break your fast, don’t eat heavy food first

Don’ts

  • Pregnant women, diabetics and urinary tract infected patients avoid fasting
  • Faulty fasting methods can trigger server health issues
  • Don’t stuff yourself with too much food before fasting
  • Avoid gossip, bitching, and nagging on this auspicious day. When you meet your women group, focus on Puja.
  • Avoid gymming, you all fitness freak women!
